Donald Trump team to decide next steps on Ukraine peace negotiations after Steve Witkoff-Putin meeting report

US special envoy Steve Witkoff is set to debrief President Donald Trump and his top national security officials at Mar-a-Lago this weekend following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. A source familiar with the discussions confirmed to CNN that Witkoff’s insights will play a crucial role in shaping Trump’s approach to Ukraine peace negotiations.

Key figures in Ukraine negotiations

Joining the debriefing will be Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, two senior officials at the heart of the Trump administration’s diplomatic push to end the war in Ukraine, as per the news report. Both Rubio and Waltz, along with Witkoff, recently met with Russian officials in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Waltz and Rubio also held talks with Ukrainian officials in Jeddah, before Witkoff’s high-level meeting in Moscow.

“We’re going to reconvene and the president will have options available to him, decisions will be made after that,” Rubio told reporters on Friday after arriving in Florida following the G7 summit in Canada.

Witkoff’s extensive diplomatic travel

Witkoff’s diplomatic efforts have taken him across multiple key capitals. His private plane landed in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night after an intense travel schedule, which included stops in Abu Dhabi, Doha, Moscow, and Baku, Azerbaijan before returning to the US.

His meeting with Putin is expected to shape Trump’s next steps in US-Russia diplomacy and Ukraine conflict resolution.

Decisions on the horizon

Rubio, who flew from Washington, DC, to Florida immediately after the G7 summit, emphasised the importance of Witkoff’s debriefing.

“We’re going to reconvene and the president will have options available to him,” Rubio said, hinting at potential policy shifts following the discussions.

As Trump’s team gathers at Mar-a-Lago, all eyes will be on how these latest diplomatic engagements influence the administration’s stance on Ukraine and US-Russia relations.
