Warm Spiced Carob Milk: The Hottest Dairy-Free Winter Beverage

I’m making a prediction. This sweet, nourishing, warm spiced carob milk recipe is going to gain steam this winter. Golden milk took off in the cooler months of 2015. It’s basically turmeric (and sometimes other spices) added to milk beverage for an immune-boosting hot drink. But this year, I think a lot of us are craving more comfort while still staying within nutritious boundaries.

Warm Carob Milk Recipe - dairy-free, vegan and lightly spiced (optionally nut-free)!This warm spiced carob milk post is sponsored by Silk, but the opinions, recipe and photos are all mine. I do purchase Silk Unsweetened Almond Milk Beverage regularly on my own, but I’m signed up for the Silk e-Newsletter since they regularly send out printable coupons!

Warm dairy-free carob milk delivers with a slight earthy flavor that’s naturally sweeter than cocoa, and oh-so nourishing. Unlike chocolate, carob contains no caffeine or theobromine, two stimulants that can be problematic for many people. It’s also rich in minerals, like dairy-free calcium, and in dietary fiber.

But in terms of taste, don’t insult carob by calling it a “chocolate substitute”. Carob has it’s own malted vibe that pairs beautifully with nourishing winter flavors, like maple syrup, cinnamon and ginger. I actually prefer “hot carob” to hot cocoa, especially when made with unsweetened almond milk. The subtle nutty goodness really enhances the natural richness of this warm carob milk. That said, if you don’t eat nuts, soymilk or your milk beverage of choice will also work nicely in this recipe.

Special Diet Notes: Warm Spiced Carob Milk

    By ingredients, this recipe is dairy-free / non-dairy, egg-free, gluten-free, grain-free, peanut-free, soy-free, vegan, plant-based, vegetarian, and optionally paleo.

For tree nut-free warm carob milk, you can use unsweetened soymilk or coconut milk beverage in place of the almond milk beverage.

Warm Carob Milk (with Spiced Option)

The Mexican spice option that I included with this recipe is subtle and warming. If you want a bigger spice hit, double the cinnamon and add both ginger and cloves.

    Ingredients Method

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk beverage I used Silk; see post above for nut-free options
    • 2 tablespoons carob powder
    • 2 tablespoons maple syrup or your liquid sweetener of choice
    • ½ tablespoon vanilla extract
    • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon optional
    • Dash ground ginger or cloves optional
    • Pinch salt

    Method

    1. Place all of the ingredients in your blender, and blend for about 30 seconds.
    2. Pour the carob milk into a saucepan and heat over medium-low heat until hot, but not boiling. For a richer, sweeter drink, you can simmer the carob milk for a few minutes.
    3. Divide the warm carob milk between two mugs and serve.

Mm, this sounds so good. Carob is great with almond milk, and everything goes with cinnamon and cloves. I can’t wait to make this tonight! (It just snowed.)

This recipe is amazing! I made it for my partner who can’t have chocolate anymore because of GERD and it’s only a slight difference between this and chocolate. This recipe is definitely a keeper!

      This is a godsend!!
My Mom got pneumonia for her 90th bday; had to be treated with a potent antibiotic She already had collagenous colitis and various types of heart failure. I’m caring for her at home. Her intestines turned into a total liquid production zone even two weeks after the antibiotic is done and feeding probiotics and an anti-diarrhea diet.
I made this drink without the spices and it’s working!!!!
      And she loves it!!
Recommendations: push the carob powder through a small serve with the measuring spoon into the blender and cook the whole thing in a double boiler, whisking from time to time

I’m going to make this tonight for my son though without the cinnamon (he’s allergic). Hopefully just adding cloves or cardamon will be enough of a flavour!

I haven’t. It should work fine, as long as the milk beverage is one that heats well (doesn’t separate).
