What’s not to love about smoothies? They taste a bit like dessert, but allow you to pack in a load of nutrition. This dairy-free pineapple ginger smoothie, for example, is stocked with both prebiotics and probiotics. It’s also rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients, is low in added sugar, and has an amazing tropical flavor!

Dairy-Free Pineapple Ginger Smoothie for a Good Belly
This dairy-free pineapple ginger smoothie tastes amazing. But it also contains a very symbiotic blend of ingredients for good digestive health, based on the research I’ve read.
Banana
The prebiotics in bananas can help to “feed” the probiotics in this pineapple ginger smoothie, helping them to proliferate in our digestive system. They also contain pectins and other fibers that allow this somewhat high sugar fruit to still be good for our guts.
Pineapple
This tropical fruit contains natural digestive enzymes that are extracted to make supplements. To date, research has focused primarily on the supplements. However, many health practitioners have reported improved digestion in patients who regularly incorporate pineapple in their diets.
Probiotics
I originally created this dairy-free pineapple ginger smoothie with GoodBelly. The product I used is no longer available (they still have these products), but I’ve adapted this recipe to use yogurt or dairy-free probiotic powder instead!
Flaxseed
The type of fiber in flax seeds has been shown to help in the digestive process and improve the intestinal absorption of nutrients. In addition, the lignans in flaxseed are linked to a reduction in colon cancer risk.
Ginger
This rhizome’s anti-queasy effects aren’t simply an old-wive’s tale. Research has proven its superpower for fighting unsettling symptoms. I often use powdered ginger for taste preferences. But for maximum potency, you can swap in 1 to 3 teaspoons of fresh crushed or minced ginger. It’s very strong, so start by blending in a little and add more as desired.
More Ingredient FAQs
- Banana: Do you have a banana-free option? Yes, mango is a delicious alternative in this recipe and also contains prebiotic fiber!
- Flaxseed: Can I substitute chia seeds? Chia seeds are a great alternative. They don’t contain the same lignans as flaxseed, but are still a good source of fiber, omega-3s and calcium.
- Sweetener: Can I use a different sweetener? The sweetener is truly optional, and your favorite type should work fine. I think agave or regular sugar are good options, but most sugar-free sweeteners will also be delicious.

Special Diet Notes: Pineapple Ginger Smoothie
By ingredients, this recipe is dairy-free / non-dairy, egg-free, gluten-free, nut-free, peanut-free, soy-free, optionally vegan, plant-based, and vegetarian. Just be sure to choose the yogurt and sweetener that suit your dietary needs.
