Creamy Citrus Smoothie with Orange and Grapefruit

This dairy-free citrus smoothie is cool, creamy, and tastes a bit indulgent, like a healthy shake. It’s made with fresh-squeezed orange juice and grapefruit juice for a bright and lightly tangy flavor. The main recipe is frosty and thick, but we’ve also included a thinner smoothie option. Either way, it’s the perfect treat in summer, when citrus is at its peak in the cooler months, after a long day, or even post workout!

    Key Ingredient Notes & Options

    • Orange Juice: You’ll need one to two oranges for this recipe. Freshly squeezed is best, if possible. If you must use store-bought, skip the from concentrate varieties and use fresh squeezed.
    • Grapefruit Juice: Use pink grapefruit or pomelo for optimum flavor. Again, fresh-squeezed is best. But I do find that store-bought pink grapefruit juice (especially fresh squeezed) is often quite good.
    • Milk Alternative: Your favorite type of non-dairy milk will work great. With the citrus flavors, I personally like coconut milk beverage, cashew milk, macadamia nut milk, or rice milk.
    • Sweetener: If you want to reduce the added sugar, you can simply use less sweetener, to taste, or substitute a sugar-free sweetener. I like stevia in smoothies. If using pure stevia, add just a few drops (liquid) or 1 scoop (powder) at a time, as it is stronger than sugar.

Protein Power Up: If you want to make a protein shake, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of your favorite dairy-free plain or vanilla protein powder. If you use a vanilla protein powder, you can optionally skip the vanilla extract. I like to use collagen peptides, which are dairy-free, but not vegan. For vegan, Orgain Plant Protein is a popular and readily available brand.

Special Diet Notes: Dairy-Free Citrus Smoothie

By ingredients, this recipe is dairy-free / non-dairy, egg-free, gluten-free, grain-free, nut-free, peanut-free, soy-free, vegan, plant-based, vegetarian, and top food allergy-friendly. Just be sure to choose a milk alternative and sweetener that suit your dietary needs.

This cool, creamy, perfectly sweet and tangy smoothie recipe was originally shared with us by Fresh from Florida Kids, a healthy state program. Because of the ice, it's a thick shake consistency, but you can use less ice to make it a thinner smoothie, and less servings. See the notes!

    Ingredients

    • ½ cup fresh-squeezed orange juice
    • ½ cup fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice
    • ½ cup unsweetened dairy-free milk alternative
    • 1 tablespoon sugar, honey, or agave nectar
    • ⅛ teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 4 cups ice
    • Sliced fruit optional for garnish

    Method

    1. Put the orange juice, grapefruit juice, milk alternative, sweetener, and vanilla into a blender with the ice.
    2. Pulse the blender to help break up the ice, then blend until smooth.
    3. Divide the shake between four glasses and garnish with sliced fruit, if desired.

    Notes

Thinner Smoothie: Use just 1/2 to 1 cup ice for 1 generous or 2 regular smoothie servings. This will make a thinner, more sippable smoothie that's also naturally more flavorful. You can omit the sweetener or just sweeten to taste with this more concentrated version.
