What’s not to love about chocolate milk? For some of us, it’s the dairy. Luckily, our options for dairy-free chocolate milk are quite expansive. I’ve found over 25 options in stores! This quick guide covers the brands available for chocolate oat milk, soy milk, nut milk, coconut milk, and more. It includes shelf-stable cartons, refrigerated bottles, and a surprising number of single-serves that you can pack along. Plus, I have my go-to Dairy-Free Chocolate Milk Recipe for you to enjoy.

Quick Guide to Dairy-Free Chocolate Milk Brands

I’ve broken the lists down into two sections, the single-serve varieties first, followed by the multi-serve packages. And, I’ve added a few nutrition labels for quick reference. Here’s the key for those attributes:

    • (C) – High Calcium – These have over 200mg of calcium per serving.
    • (S) – Low Sugar – These have 10 grams or less of added sugar per serving.
    • (P) – High Protein – These have 5 grams or more protein per serving.

Allergen Notes: All items listed below are dairy-free by ingredients. But ingredients are subject to change at any time, and all products are at some degree of risk for allergen cross contamination, whether they have a “may contain” statement or not. Always read the label before consuming any food, and make sure you are familiar with this may contain information. Only you can decide what is safe for your needs.

Disclosure: This post contains some affiliate links to retailers that we buy from, too. We might receive a commission if you make purchases through these links. These commissions do not direct our content, but do help to support the maintenance of our site. We appreciate your support!

    Ingredients Method Nutrition Notes

    Ingredients

    Chocolate Syrup (12 servings)
    • ¾ to ⅞ cup sugar to taste
    • ½ cup cocoa powder
    • Tiny pinch salt
    • ½ cup cold water
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    Dairy-Free Chocolate Milk (1 serving)
    • 1 cup plain or unsweetened plain dairy-free milk alternative
    • 1 tablespoon Chocolate Syrup or to taste

    Method

    Chocolate Syrup
    1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt until no cocoa clumps remain. Gradually whisk in the water until smooth.
    2. Place the pan over medium heat. Whisk continuously as the mixture comes to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 3 minutes, whisking often. If it thickens too much, you can whisk in more water as needed.
    3. Remove the pan from the heat, and stir in the vanilla. Let it cool to room temperature.
    4. Leftover chocolate sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. It will thicken a little bit more as it refrigerates.
    Dairy-Free Chocolate Milk
    1. To make 1 serving of dairy-free chocolate milk, pour the milk beverage into a glass and drizzle in the chocolate syrup while stirring.
    2. Taste, and stir in more chocolate syrup, if desired.

    Notes

Cocoa Note: I use natural cocoa powder in this recipe, but Dutch-processed cocoa powder will yield a richer, sweeter flavor.
Craving Carob? If you are a carob fan like me, you can substitute carob powder for the cocoa powder. Or you can substitute carob powder for half of the cocoa powder to make a tasty carob-chocolate milk blend.
Homemade Milk Alternatives: You can use store-bought. But a couple of my favorite homemade milk alternative recipes include this Simply Almond Milk Copycat and Pure Cashew Milk.
Ingredient Notes: See my full Homemade Chocolate Syrup Recipe for customization notes and other tips.
Nutrition Note: The nutrition facts are based on unsweetened almond milk. They will vary based on the type of milk alternative that you use.
The recipe is slightly adapted from my flagship book, Go Dairy Free: The Guide and Cookbook.
