Perhaps you’ve heard of Dole Whip? It’s a fruity soft serve that has a cult-like following among the allergen community. It’s well known at the Disney parks, but is also swirled at ice cream and froyo shops across the country. There are even shops on Hawaii dedicated to it. And over the years, the Dole chefs have whipped up several at-home versions made with fresh fruit. They shared Dark Chocolate Dole Whip, Pumpkin Spice Dole Whip, and this recipe for Berry Dole Whip.

This Berry Dole Whip is a Soft Serve you can Blend at Home

This recipe was originally shared with us by Dole, in honor of National Banana Day. It’s a pretty straight-forward recipe, but there is always room for personalization! I have tips and suggestions in the FAQs below.

Can I Use a Different Sweetener?

Definitely! Most sweeteners will work just fine. The powdered sugar just blends in seamlessly. If you opt for a different sweetener, keep in mind that it might influence the overall flavor.

    Can I Omit the Sweetener?

That really depends on the sweetness of your fruit and your personal taste. The riper the fruit, the sweeter it will be. Adding just a little bit of sweetener helps to enhance the natural sweetness of the fruit and makes the flavors pop. Technically, it’s just 1 1/2 teaspoons of sugar (6 grams) per generous serving. I recommend blending this berry Dole whip without the sweetener, tasting, and then adding sweetener to taste.

How Can I Make this Berry Dole Whip Banana-Free?

If you can’t eat bananas,  or simply don’t like them, you can substitute mango for the banana. Simply cut the mango flesh of two ripe mangoes roughly into cubes and freeze them, or buy frozen mango. If buying fresh mango, be sure to look for low fiber or fiber-free mangoes like Honey/Ataulfo, Keitt, Kent, Kesar, Manilla, or Edward. Mango will impart a different, but very delicious flavor that goes nicely with pineapple and berries.

Can I Make this in an Ice Cream Maker?

Yes! Cuisinart makes a fun soft serve machine. If you want it even thicker, you can omit the liquid and use a Yonanas Soft Serve Maker. If you’re using all fresh fruit (not frozen), you can churn it in a classic ice cream maker or freeze it with a Creami.

It Makes too Much! What Do I Do with the Leftovers?

First, if you don’t need that much, feel free to half the ingredients. But if you’re okay with extra, put it in an freezer-safe container. It will make a harder-packed sherbet-style ice cream. If it becomes to hard for easy scooping, you can reblend it.

This soft serve "ice cream" is a healthy version of Dole Whip, the popular dairy-free frozen dessert sold across the U.S. It's a bit like a creamy sorbet in consistency.
