Some of the best Halloween recipe ideas are naturally allergy friendly, like this dairy-free bubbling witch’s brew. It’s free from top allergens, takes minutes to make, and contains healthy citrus juices. As an added bonus, the recipe includes an option to make adorable Jack O’Lantern fruit cups with the orange peels from your freshly squeezed juice.

Bubbling Witch’s Brew for your Healthier Halloween Menu

This recipe was originally shared with us a decade ago by Fruits from Chile, but it was in our news section. I’m adding it to our recipe section, with some more options and information. It fits in nicely with my goal to add more easy, naturally dairy-free recipes with nutrition goals specific to you and me. And it’s perfect for the Halloween season.

This is a simple recipe, that doesn’t require any strange ingredients or chemical reactions. It’s a tasty Halloween punch that won’t make a mess. In fact, the only thing out of the ordinary about this witch’s potion is its ability to promote strong bones. Yes, studies have shown that citrus juice can have a very positive effect on bone health in more ways than one! In fact, scientists have found it positively influences bine mineral density in both children and adults.

Create a Chilling Effect: Make If you want to add some wow to your witch’s brew, and are up for a mini science experiment, you can add a large chunk of dry ice to your punch bowl. It should be large enough that no one ladles it into their drink. Dry ice adds that cool spooky fog that is safe to put in liquid, but it should never be consumed. Only use it if you know how to handle dry ice. If you do opt for the smoke effect, I would really get in the Halloween spirit with a cauldron punch bowl.

This sweet tangy punch makes enough for a small party. You can double or triple the recipe for a larger group. Please note that the prep time is hands on time only. It's good to have at least an hour to let the fruit juice chill, if possible.

    Notes

Jack O' Lantern Option: This is a great way to use the orange peel, but it must be done before you squeeze out the orange juice for the witch's brew. Cut off the top 1/5 of each orange. Use a paring knife to separate the fruit from inside of the orange, being careful not to cut through peel. It’s not necessary to get all of the flesh out, just enough to fill with cut fruit. Squeeze the juice from the removed fruit and use it for the Bubbling Witch's Brew. If needed, shave a small amount of peel off the bottom so the cups sit level, being careful not to create an opening in the base. Use a paring knife to carve faces. Fill each cup with orange pieces, melon balls, grapes, and blueberries.
Soda Note: Plain sparkling water will make a tart brew, with sweetness that relies on your oranges. If needed, you can sweeten it by stirring sugar or agave nectar in, to taste. Alternatively you can use a sweetened soda. Everyday lemon lime soda, like Sprite, will work well. Or you can use a natural soda in a citrus flavor. The nutrition facts listed are for witch's brew made with sparkling water.
Garnish Option: Peel a couple mandarin oranges. Thinly sliced them horizontally to make pinwheel shapes that resemble spider webs. Put a slice in each drink, or cut a slit to the center and put one on the side of each glass.
