If you’re looking for fancy pretentious soups served in sipping cups, I’d move on. But if you’re craving comforting soups that embrace you with warmth and flavor, you’ve come to the right place. These are the best dairy-free soup recipes in my not-so-humble opinion. They include creamy chowders, traditional family favorites, easy one-pot meals, and so much more.

The 25 Best Dairy-Free Soup Recipes
We’ve made hundreds of soups over the years, but our Go Dairy Free family says these are the best dairy-free soup recipes. Though our focus is “just dairy free,” we do like to include options for all. So the majority of these recipes are, or have options for, egg-free, gluten-free, nut-free, soy-free, and vegan needs. So don’t hesitate to check them out, even if you have other dietary restrictions!
Creamy Potato Soup
I would rank this favorite soup as a hidden gem on our website. It’s a simple recipe with several special touches. The base of Yukon gold potatoes lends natural creaminess to the texture, while two surprise ingredients provide an addictive umami flavor and silky finish. Plus, you won’t even need any milk alternatives for this recipe!
Hearty Mushroom Barley Soup
Move over chicken! This soup is elevated with mushrooms, richer broth, and unique additions, like a touch of balsamic vinegar and tomato paste. Trust me, it all comes together to create one of the best dairy-free soup recipes of all time.
Dairy-Free Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup
This isn’t the soup you are expecting. It is the only nut-based soup on this list. But if you are okay with cashews, it is so worth it. The recipe is from Go Dairy Free: 2nd Edition and it is amazing as a soup, in casserole and slow cooker recipes, and it freezes very, very well! Plus, the taste is truly next level. Move over Campbell’s!
Creamy Thai Tomato Soup
This rich soup was a happy accident when I was working on a completely different recipe. I intended to create lettuce wraps, but somehow ended up with one of the best dairy-free soup recipes I’ve ever had. It’s addictive, meal worthy, and is a delicious cross between classic tomato soup, comforting stew, and a Thai coconut milk red curry. It’s wonderful by the spoonful or served over rice.
Creamy Vegan Miso Ramen
This is another cookbook favorite from East, by Meera Sodha. The base soup has incredible depth in flavor that rivals even the best Asian restaurants. Yet, it’s easy to blend up in your own kitchen.
Roasted Carrot Bisque with Variations
This beloved recipe is from my cookbook, Eat Dairy Free. In the book, I call it Roasted Carrot Cream Soup, to be a little more descriptive. The recipe includes various flavor options, including Smoky, Herb, Curry, Butternut Squash, and Sweet Potato. I challenge you to try them all!
Linda’s Chicken Vegetable Soup
Famed food allergy cookbook author, Linda Coss, shared this family favorite with us many years ago. The original version is made in a slow cooker, but the recipe also works great on the stove top or in an Instant Pot. We’ve even included a stew version that can be cooked in the oven.
Dairy-Free Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup
This is another classic from my flagship cookbook, Go Dairy Free. It is incredibly fast to whip up, works great in recipes, and even has a delicious silky flavor when enjoyed as a simple soup. Not a fan of mushrooms? I have a Dairy-Free Condensed Cream of Celery Soup Recipe too! Note that the picture below is condensed. It can be used like this in recipes, or you add water to make it a soup – just like Campbell’s!
Vegan Vichyssoise
I’d be remiss if I didn’t include a chilled soup on our best dairy-free soups list. This is a marvelously simple French recipe that veers just a touch from tradition. It’s made with a base of pureed potato, leeks, and vegetable stock, and is enriched with dairy-free milk alternative. Just let it cool in the refrigerator, and finish it with a few churns of freshly ground black pepper.
Roasted Tomato Soup
This very special, perfectly creamy soup recipe comes from the popular Shine Cafe in Morro Bay on the central coast of California. It’s filled with fresh, flavorful ingredients that can be found in most home gardens. But you can find them at the grocery store, too!
Bob’s Stick to Your Ribs Split Pea Soup
Thick and hearty, this recipe will satisfy every split pea soup fan. It’s slow simmered with split peas, the staple vegetables, herbs, and of course, the all important ham bone.
Thai Coconut Soup
This is an Americanized Cooking Light version of Tom Kha Goong soup. It uses ingredients that are easier to find in any grocery store (i.e. ginger instead of galangal and regular limes instead of kaffir limes), but retains that alluring flavor.
Grandma’s Southern Style Chicken & Dumplings
It isn’t fancy, but this family favorite sure tastes good! It’s become a tradition in Sarah’s household, and was passed down from her grandmother-in-law.
Macaroni & Cheese Soup
There’s no need to miss out on the cheesy side of soups. This delicious dish is from Vegan Soups and Stews for All Seasons, and was created by bestselling author Nava Atlas.
Purple Potato Chowder
No one could ever call Hannah’s recipes boring. Aside from the beautiful lavender hue, this far-from-ordinary potato soup is stocked with Asian-inspired herbs and spices, including lemongrass and ginger. It also contains a unique yet harmonious blend of produce and has the perfect creamy consistency.
Chicken Barley Soup for the Soul
When you’re craving a classic, make this nourishing soup. I prefer it to chicken noodle. The barley has such a delicious chew that doesn’t get too soft in chicken broth, like pasta noodles do. So you can make a big soup pot!
Fresh Cream Corn Soup
Of course, you can you frozen if needed, but this soup truly shines with fresh summer corn. For extra flavor, there is a roasted corn option.
Pumpkin Curry Soup
This pumpkin soup contains just five simple ingredients, which are left to simmer in your slow cooker or crockpot. The flavors develop more as it cooks.
Mom’s Turkey Vegetable Soup
Some people with milk allergies can’t eat beef, which is also the case for people with Alpha-gal syndrome. Which is why Sarah makes her vegetable soup with turkey. Her kids love it, and she says it’s a great way to sneak in and use up leftover veggies.
Wonton Soup
My husband’s favorite is easily wonton soup. He used to order it every time we went to a Chinese restaurant, until we learned how to make perfect wonton dumplings at home!
Hearty Beef Stew with Roasted Vegetables
This is down home cooking at it’s best. The only modern twist is pre-roasted vegetables, which add a wonderful caramelized flavor. Serve it in a bowl with crusty bread, or ladle it over fluffy rice or dairy-free mashed potatoes.
Bistro Broccoli Chowder
Isa Chandra Moskowitz is a legendary vegan cookbook author and restauranteur. So I wasn’t surprised by the unique ingredients in her popular broccoli chowder recipe. She adds parsnips and rosemary to the creamy base for complementary flavors. If her recipes intrigue you, I suggest checking out this French Farmhouse Asparagus Bisque too!
Cuban Black Bean Soup
The instructions couldn’t be easier for this hearty yet low fat vegan soup. Just cook, blend, stir, and garnish with fresh herbs. It’s made with spices and salsa for that extra kick of flavor. The recipe is a popular one from Happy Herbivore.
Creamy Fennel Soup
Those big white bulbs of fennel might look boring, but their anise-like flavor is far from ordinary. If you enjoy the nuances of licorice, then this creamy soup must be worked into your weekly rotation. The fennel is sauteed with onion and garlic, simmered in broth, complemented with fresh parsley and tarragon, and garnished with the fennel fronds.
Vegan French Onion Soup
No list of the best dairy-free soup recipes would be complete without an impressive dairy copycat soup. I’ve never seen it in a restaurant, but you can make dairy-free French onion soup at home. This recipe is from the The 30-Minute Vegan’s Taste of Europe by Mark Reinfeld. He is one of my favorite cookbook authors.
