Updated for 2025! Dairy-free frozen desserts have come a long way. Twenty years ago, there were only a few pints hidden in the frozen food section of expensive markets. Now, we have entire chilled sections dedicated to non-dairy delights in many grocery stores. The question has shifted from what dairy-free ice cream is available to which one you should try first! So which are the best dairy-free ice cream brands? We sampled our weight in store-bought dairy-free frozen desserts and factored in reviews from you, our readers, to find out!

Taste Test: The Best Dairy-Free Ice Cream Brands
Allergen Notes: All items listed below are dairy-free by ingredients. But ingredients are subject to change at any time, and all products are at some degree of risk for allergen cross contamination, whether they have a “may contain” statement or not. Always read the label before consuming any food, and make sure you are familiar with this may contain information. Only you can decide what is safe for your needs.
I’ve listed the best dairy-free ice cream brands in order, with the top pick first. But I also have some “best in category” favorites to share as a little preview.
- Best Overall: So Delicious Cashewmilk
- Cleanest Ingredients: Frönen
- Best a la mode: Breyers Non-Dairy
- Top for Allergen-Free: So Delicious Plant-Based Blend
So Delicious Dairy Free Cashewmilk Frozen Dessert (where to buy)
When these cashewmilk pints landed on the market, it was a game changer for dairy-free consumers. After years of coconutty ice cream, this dreamy line emerged with a more neutral base flavor and unbelievable decadence. It was a clear winner in our dairy-free Vanilla Ice Cream and Chocolate Ice Cream taste tests, but their fancier flavors have even more fans. Trust me, even die hard dairy ice cream fans have trouble turning down a scoop of these varieties. (See more reviews.)
- Base: Cashew Milk
- Champion Flavors: Salted Caramel Cluster, Very Vanilla, Dark Chocolate Truffle
- Top Allergens: tree nuts, peanuts (select flavors)
- Other Dietary Notes: Each flavor is certified kosher pareve, vegan, gluten-free.
- Availability: United States, Canada

Breyers Non-Dairy Ice Cream (where to buy)
If you’re a value-oriented consumer, then this brand is must buy. It’s sweet, creamy, sold at many major grocers, and comes in 1.5-quart tubs that are even cheaper than many dairy-free pints. Breyers Non-Dairy is quite indulgent, but it has a lighter whipped cream meets ice cream consistency. Please note that Breyers Non-Dairy quarts look very similar to their dairy varieties, but the dairy-free versions have a green lid. (See more reviews.)
- Base: Oat Milk
- Champion Flavors: Vanilla, Cookies & Cream
- Top Allergens: soy, wheat (cookie variety only)
- Other Dietary Notes: The non-cookie varieties are labeled as “gluten free.”
- Availability: United States

Talenti Dairy Free Gelato (where to buy)
We’ve been fans of their dairy-free sorbetto for more than a decade, but in recent years, Talenti has leveled up with an indulgent dairy-free gelato line. This is the only brand on both our best sorbet and best dairy-free ice cream lists. And for good reason. Their dairy-free gelato is rich, decadent, and layered or swirled with amazing dessert add-ins. It had some of our tasters asking, “are you sure there’s no dairy?” But please note that this is a “just dairy-free” line. They do use eggs. Yes, eggs are dairy-free. (See more reviews.)
- Base: Oat Milk or Cashew Butter
- Champion Flavors: Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Double Cookie Crunch
- Top Allergens: egg, soy, wheat (select flavors), tree nuts (select flavors)
- Other Dietary Notes: The Caramel Toffee Crunch is made without gluten, but isn’t labeled as gluten-free. Only their fruit sorbettos are vegan.
- Availability: United States

Jeni’s Dairy-Free Ice Cream (where to buy)
This Midwest ice cream shop began shipping out their pints direct to customers years ago. The eventually added a dairy-free selection that you can order online or buy in stores. And they are delicious! We detected nary a hint of coconut in these deeply rich and creamy flavors. They’ve managed to balance the ingredients, letting the individual pint flavors take center stage. (See more reviews.)
- Base: Coconut Cream
- Champion Flavors: Caramel Pecan Sticky Buns, Lemon Bar, Dark Chocolate Truffle
- Top Allergens: wheat (select flavors), peanuts (select flavors), tree nuts (select flavors)
- Other Dietary Notes: All dairy-free varieties are also vegan, and a few are labeled as gluten-free.
- Availability: United States

Nora’s Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert
Someone finally tapped into the delicious, neutral combination of cashews and coconut. The two ingredients complement and nearly cancel one another out to create a base that lets the individual flavors shine through. These delicious pints aren’t too sweet, are perfectly rich, and have pleasant flavors. It’s a delightful ice cream that felt like an “any day” kind of treat.
- Base: Cashews and Coconut Cream
- Champion Flavors: Vanilla Bean, Strawberries & Creme
- Top Allergens: tree nuts, peanuts (select flavor)
- Other Dietary Notes: All flavors are certified vegan and certified gluten-free
- Availability: Canada

Cado Avocado Frozen Dessert (where to buy)
This company whips avocado puree and avocado oil with other natural and organic ingredients to create a surprisingly creamy finish. Their simple varieties are quite flavorful, yet lower in sugar than many other decadent brands. They seem to strike a nice balance between sweetness (organic cane sugar) and a hint of saltiness (sea salt). (See more reviews.)
- Base: Avocado and Avocado Oil (just avocado oil in the Vanilla)
- Champion Flavors: Choco Peanut Butter, Salted Caramel
- Top Allergens: peanuts (select flavors)
- Other Dietary Notes: All flavors are vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, tree nut-free, and even coconut-free. Their base doesn’t contain any added legume proteins, though the cookies in the Cookies & Cream do contain pea protein.
- Availability: United States

Frönen Non-Dairy Frozen Desserts (where to buy)
This simple brand shed their nice cream image, switching from bananas to a coconut cream base years ago. The transition was successful, and has brought many new fans on board for both taste and quality. Each flavor is made with just 3 to 9 ingredients and is sweetened solely with honey and/or coconut sugar. We loved the clean recipe and taste, which isn’t too coconut forward. (See more reviews.)
- Base: Coconut Cream
- Champion Flavors: Salted Caramel Swirl, Mango
- Top Allergens: peanuts (select flavors)
- Other Dietary Notes: The Salted Caramel Swirl and Latte are vegan, but the other flavors contain honey. All varieties are touted as gluten-free, soy-free, and paleo-friendly.
- Availability: United States

So Delicious Plant-Based Blend Frozen Dessert (where to buy)
This is the dairy-free ice cream formerly known as Wondermilk. If you’re a fan of Breyer’s Non-Dairy, then this line is a must try. It’s got a similar whipped consistency and creamy mouthfeel. It’s on the sweet side, and lacks a little depth in flavor that some of the other brands boast. But all-in-all, it’s a solid contender and a great allergy-friendly options. (See more reviews.)
- Base: Pea Protein and Coconut Oil
- Champion Flavors: Vanilla Bean, Cookies & Creme, Strawberry
- Top Allergens: none
- Other Dietary Notes: At last check, all flavors were certified vegan and certified gluten-free
- Availability: United States, Canada

Ben & Jerry’s Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert (where to buy)
Their popularity has suffered a little since they switched to an oat milk base, but it’s still hard to deny the indulgent factor of this brand. They still offer numerous unique flavors, each with dessert firmly in mind. We find them a little too sweet, but not everyone does! Plus, if a voracious sweet tooth hits, you can find these pints in thousands of grocers across the country. And we do love that they go on sale often. (See more reviews.)
- Base: Oat Milk
- Champion Flavors: P.B. & Cookies, Strawberry Cheezecake, Chocolate Fudge Brownie
- Top Allergens: soy, wheat (select flavors), peanuts (select flavors) tree nuts (select flavors)
- Other Dietary Notes: All Non-Dairy pints are certified vegan and kosher dairy equipment. Select varieties are certified gluten free (see our Ben & Jerry’s guide).
- Availability: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia

Häagen-Dazs Plant-Based (where to buy)
We were beyond disappointed when Häagen-Dazs discontinued their decadent dairy-free line in the U.S. They still haven’t launched a dairy-free line south of the border. But in Canada, this newer plant-based selection is available. These varieties are soft, creamy, decadent, and sweet – dessert through and through. They fooled a few dairy eaters, and several people said this brand tastes the most like dairy ice cream. The level of sugars is a little shocking, but note the bigger serving size, too. (See more reviews.)
- Base: Oats
- Champion Flavors: Caramel Fudge Chip
- Top Allergens: soy (select flavors), peanuts (select flavors), tree nuts (select flavors)
- Other Dietary Notes: All flavors are certified vegan. We couldn’t find gluten-free status on the oats used.
- Availability: Canada

Honorable Mentions
If we made it a top 20, these brands would also be on our best dairy-free ice cream brands list.
- So Delicious Dairy Free Coconutmilk Frozen Dessert – This is still a popular line from So Delicious, and we do like it. But in our tastings it was just a little too coconut forward for several people.
- Tofutti Dairy Free Frozen Dessert – Like many of you, we still love this classic brand made with non-GMO soy and cocoa butter. Unfortunately, it’s just become so hard to find that it can’t remain at the top of our list.
- Mauna Loa Macadamia Milk – This is the first macadamia nut milk ice cream, and it holds promise. The flavors are fragrant and impressive. The consistency is more like ice milk, which we loved as a more refreshing treat on a hot day. But it lacks that soft creaminess that you might be expecting from frozen dessert.
- Sprouts Cashewmilk Frozen Dessert – This is a house brand that has gained popularity for its rich, flavorful cashew base. They also have a Coconutmilk line with more classic varieties.
- So Delicious Dairy Free Oatmilk Frozen Dessert – This once boisterous line has dwindled to just two flavors. While it does have fans, it’s firmly in the “pretty good” category.
- Nadamoo Dairy-Free Frozen Dessert – This long-time coconut milk-based brand has lost their mainstream distribution, making their products harder to find. But you can still find their coconut-forward pints in regional natural food stores.
- Bettergoods Plant-Based Oatmilk Frozen Dessert – This is a Walmart brand that is turning natural foodie heads. It includes many dairy-free products, including a full line of oatmilk ice cream. Though it isn’t as “wow” as several other brands, the classic flavors and affordable price keep customers coming back for more.
- Earth Grown Frozen Desserts – This is an ALDI (U.S.) exclusive brand that comes and goes very quickly. Over the years, they’ve made flavors with oat milk, almond milk, and coconut milk. They always receive raves from dairy-free consumers, but their very brief and sporadic availability bumped them off our best list.
- Oatly – This popular brand has great distribution, but none of our tasters can get passed the “oati-ness” of their flavors. It also isn’t as creamy and rich as some people liked. Nevertheless, it has a loyal following and is a good allergy-friendly option.
- Cosmic Bliss – This brand is truly for coconut lover’s only. We love the clean, organic ingredients, and do like coconut. But many of the flavors are intensely coconut and also have a denser consistency due to the lower sugars.

I have tried several different vegan ice creams; most were on your list. I’ve never heard of most of the brands you listed. The stores in our small town don’t carry too many dairy-free products. They have So Delicious, Breyers and a couple of other brands whose name I forgot! Several are coconut based which unfortunately upset my tum. Breyers is okay, but lately they only get in the Oreo cookie variety which in my opinion is not nearly as good as the peanut butter ripple. Why can’t they just make a nice plain vanilla, allowing you to add whatever flavour you like?
Recently Metro and Food Basics have started carrying their house brand, Irresistibles, variety of ice cream 500 ml tubs as well as some frozen bars. Those bars are delish!!! I hadn’t noticed when I bought them that they are coconut based, but I didn’t notice any coconut aftertaste nor was I burping coconut for hours after! Definitely try them if you see them. They are also less expensive than some of the other brands.
Lactaid is my favorite.
That’s a great option for people who are lactose intolerant! We don’t cover it here because it isn’t dairy-free.
Do you have any recipes for making your own dairy-free ice cream? That could be something interesting to write about. I’d be more interested in making my own than buying it from a company and not 100% know what’s in it.
Yes, we have dozens of ice cream recipes posted. Just use the search at top, or start with this post that includes a round up of 31 flavors of dairy-free ice cream recipes -> https://godairyfree.org/news/dairy-free-ice-cream-recipes
Unfortunately, I can only have the oat or coconut based products. I was surprised to see Simple Truth Organic on the list, because I think their yogurts are “if that’s the only thing available to eat, I might have to force myself to have one.” Alisa, did you try Oatly products?
Hi Vicki,
Well, it looks like there are some great oat and coconut options at least! We’ve tried Oatly here and also have several reader reviews for Oatly. It was only so-so in the blind vanilla ice cream taste tests we did with both dairy-free and dairy eaters -> https://godairyfree.org/news/best-dairy-free-vanilla-ice-cream – and it hasn’t received strong reviews from readers either. Like all products, some people love them, some don’t. It just hasn’t had as consistently high marks as the other ones on this list.
I can’t personally speak to Simple Truth, since those stores aren’t in my local area, but it’s been highly ranked by readers and some other contributors.
Thanks, Alisa. I like Oatly’s mint chocolate chip, and will check out the Simple Truth products. Thanks for this list…I might have to take a cooler with me for the 45 minute drive to some specialty grocers further away. None of the other products are available locally. It will definitely help to take your list with me!
I love vegan ice creams. Recently I got my hands on Nature’s Organic vegan flavored ice cream – Vegan Strawberry. Trust me, it tastes so good that you won’t get enough of it!
Breyers Non-dairy there are 4 flavors
Yes, they are mentioned in the post above, and we have full details on them here -> https://godairyfree.org/product-reviews/breyers-non-dairy-ice-cream
Where you can also leave your own review!
your site is awesome! I have learned so much!!! Thanks u so much
So yummy! I love those a lot!
I am a big fan of ice cream. Thank you for your sharing. I like it a lot!
We just tried Frönen for the first time… we really enjoyed every flavor! Yum!!
I love! Love, love Coconut Bliss but it’s impossible to get where we live… our Whole Foods stopped carrying it and our other market only has chocolate. So Delicious coconut base vanilla is very good!! Has anyone tried the So Delicious sugar free coconut base vanilla? My husband loves all of their flavors… cashew and coconut base. I don’t love Nada Moo… we buy it, but it’s not my favorite. Something about the consistency bothers me… it’s almost too fluffy??
I have truly become a huge Frönen fan… talk about clean ingredients… wow. And it’s really good!!
Thank you for sharing all of this Maggie! I welcome you to leave ratings and reviews on these ice creams, too. We have them all in our dairy-free ice cream section -> https://godairyfree.org/product-reviews/frozen-desserts
Each one has an Amazon-style review form at bottom, with no login required.
The Fronen post is here -> https://godairyfree.org/product-reviews/fronen-dairy-free-ice-cream
There was a comment Breyers only had 2 flavors. WRONG. There us plain vanilla, chocolate and even oreo cookie
Hi Christine, Breyer’s only has two Dairy-Free flavors. I believe the ones you are referring to are Lactose-Free. Here is information on the dairy-free products -> https://godairyfree.org/product-reviews/breyers-non-dairy-ice-cream. If you are lactose intolerant, and not avoiding dairy for any other reason, then the lactose-free flavors are a great option. But for dairy-free needs, those should be avoided.
Trader Joe’s vanilla soy ice cream is super yummy. I melt some TJ cookie butter (also vegan) and pour on top for some major indulgence.
Cado Avacado dark chocolate frozen desert.
Talenti peanut butter fudge sorbetto is hands down the creamiest most luxurious non dairy ice sorbet on this planet but ridiculously hard to find in stock from Maryland to Florida to Chicago, etc! I’m going to have to try Hagen Das chocolate peanut butter. Thanks for the review!
I have tried numerous brands and flavors since my local market stopped carrying my favorite which is Double Rainbow “Very Cherry Chip”. The best I have ever tasted! Gotta find another source and hopefully I can get a gallon!
Unfortunately, Perfectly Free ice cream is no longer being produced. It was my favorite, local ice cream. ;(
Hands down the very best vegan ice cream is Trader Joe’s Soy Vanilla frozen dessert with their Chocolate Cherry Chip a close second. I’m not 100% positive but I really believe that Double Rainbow makes their Soy Ice Cream. Whoever, it THE BEST and by ingredient list the healthiest. It is organic and with far fewer chemicals additives than any other brand I’ve seen. And it half the price to boot!!
Thank you for sharing this Mary! Yes, I think it is Double Rainbow too.
can i ge t these icecream in jamaica
We have quite a few restrictions that make selecting the perfect ice cream a difficult task so I appreciate all the details you included about the brands. We don’t have Perfectly Free here but I really like their frozen bites. And I’d have to say that So Delicious is probably our go-to, but we just have to watch out for nuts.
I agree, it’s definitely harder with nut-free. There was one banana brand that was actually quite good. I’ve got to find that one again!
This really is a great time to be a vegan ice cream lover! When I first went vegan, the options were on the slim side. Nowadays, I haven’t even tried all of these on your list!
My favorite vegan ice cream is Ben & Jerry’s PB & Cookie. Second place would be So Delicious Snickerdoodle. Coconut Bliss Cherry Amaretto was my favorite for the longest time, but I haven’t had it in way too long now.
You have a sweet tooth, like me! Excellent choices 🙂
It’s so exciting to see so many new dairy-free ice cream choices! My favorite is So Delicious cashew, I haven’t tried Haagen Daz. That will happen soon!
Yes, that does need to happen soon. Those Haagen Dazs dairy free pints are epic!
Vegan ice cream really has come a long way! I remember when the only kinds I could find were Rice Dream and Tofutti. I’ve only tried a few on this list, so I think I need to get myself to the grocery store!
Well which is your favorite thus far Dianne? Or did I miss one of your favorites?
I am so happy to find dairy free frozen desserts on the shelves in the stores. Sometimes I just don’t have time to make it at home. Your recommendations is greatly appreciated. I like the So Delicious, but want to try some of the others.
Yes, I definitely recommend branching out a little. They all offer such different experiences.
There are so many good choices! Some I haven’t tried yet, but the So Delicious is probably my favorite. My mom is crazy about the Mocha Almond Fudge Coconutmilk dessert.
Ooh, I could see that one being popular with coffee fans.
How can these products be called ice cream when these is no cream in it? Oxymoron? How do you get milk from an almond or cashew?
You have heard of coconut cream and coconut milk, correct? Those are a real foods that have been around since before “ice cream” was a term. In other cultures “milk” has been used for centuries to describe things that aren’t dairy. And “to cream” or “to milk” something doesn’t just refer to dairy. People use these terms for familiarity and description. If it’s confusing, the ingredients can always clear it up for you, that’s what we have to read all the time! All of the above products are made with similar ingredients to ice cream (with dairy-free base instead of dairy milk), churned like ice cream, scoop like ice cream, and in general, have tastes and creamy consistencies of ice cream. If they create specific terms for dairy-free products, that would be helpful. Thus far, they’ve only tried to limit terms rather than creating them. Unfortunately, “frozen dessert” can be dairy or dairy-free, a novelty or a pint, or even an icebox cake – it can be any dessert that is frozen, no matter the ingredients or type. Once more specific and recognizable terms are created and disseminated, I’m sure that the special diet communities will be more than happy to embrace them. We would love to recognize dairy-free products easily! Perhaps you know someone who can fund such a campaign?
What a round-up! Somehow I find the dairy-free ice creams I’ve been able to try a little too sweet for me. Perhaps its because they are trying to mask some of the coconut flavour. Still better than nothing though!
Yes, I agree with you. I’m posting a sorbet list later this week that might appeal to you more, as there are some creamy, less sweet options.
I love that there are so many dairy free ice creams now. For me, the least amount of ingredients the better. I also prefer a coconut base – it’s creamier and I have less issues with allergies.
I could see that – very rich and fulfilling too.
Great list…now I’m obsessed with Booja Booja 😉
That is such a neat brand!
I had no idea So Delicious made a peachy maple pecan flavor! I’ll have to look for it and that caramel cafe pint of Perfectly Free. Yum!!
It’s one of their new flavors, and it’s so unique but really good!
Thanks for such a comprehensive review and for including Canada!
Of course! I do my best 🙂
I tried a lot of the different flavors of Stevie’s Ice Cream and I thought a lot of the flavors are nasty. I did like the lemon blueberry ice box cake flavor, because there is a lot of flavor in the one flavor of ice cream.
Thanks for sharing Brittany!
Definitely the SO Delicious Cashew milk Ice Creams!! Especially their Bars! OMG!
Agreed! And the bars list is coming up 🙂
Totally agree. I just had their salted caramel bar for the first time and it is AMAZING! I don’t miss the dairy at all!
That’s awesome!
That’s a hard choice! For versatility, I’d say So Delicious Vanilla Cashewmilk. But for eating, the Ben & Jerry’s flavors are just spot on, especially the PB & Cookies and the Caramel Almond Brittle.
I have to agree – that vanilla cashewmilk is a go-to around here!
