You might think finding milk and cheese alternatives is your biggest challenge when going dairy free. But sometimes, it’s the unexpected things – like pasta sauce, salad dressing, and yes, bread! Years ago, my local store didn’t have a single dairy-free bread option. Fortunately, the choices have expanded quite a bit. In fact, I’m happy to share several delicious dairy-free bread brands that are sold in mainstream and natural grocers.

Top Dairy-Free Bread Brands for Your Shopping List
This guide is about traditional, wheat-based, dairy-free bread brands. See our Best Gluten-Free Breads guide if you need loaves without dairy and gluten.
Allergen Notes: As specifically noted, the items listed below are dairy-free by ingredients. But ingredients are subject to change at any time, and all products are at some degree of risk for allergen cross contamination, whether they have a “may contain” statement or not. Always read the label before consuming any food, and make sure you are familiar with this may contain information. Only you can decide what is safe for your needs.
Silver Hills Bakery (where to buy – U.S. and Canada)
In my opinion, you really get what you pay for with this brand, and then some. Their loaves are certified organic, sprouted, and made in a dairy-free, nut-free, and soy-free facility. And most importantly, they taste delicious. I like their “nuttier” breads, which make amazing avocado toast. My husband prefers their soft wheat, which has the taste and texture of a traditional wheat bread. (This company is on our Dedicated Dairy-Free Facility List.)

Dave’s Killer Bread (where to buy – U.S.)
This legendary bread line includes dozens of varieties, all certified organic, kosher parve, and vegan friendly. Their range includes White Bread Done Right, 21 Whole Grains and Seeds, and everything in between. To top it off, DKB is found in countless grocery stores and even Costco. Please note that they’ve added a couple snack products that contain dairy, but all of their sandwich breads are dairy free.

Food for Life (where to buy – U.S. and Canada)
This is one of the original sprouted bread brands, and they take quality seriously. All of their loaves are dairy-free, certified organic, kosher parve, and made with a range of flourless sprouted whole grains, seeds, and legumes. The slices are a bit slimmer than average, but are also quite hearty. Most of their breads have a bold Ezekiel label (for easy spotting) and they are often sold frozen. (This company is on our Dedicated Dairy-Free Facility List.)

Rudi’s (where to buy – U.S.)
If you want the comforting texture of soft bread with an ingredient list you can pronounce, then I recommend trying this brand. Their certified organic breads come in the classics, Cracked Wheat, Country White, and more. And they are all dairy-free and mostly vegan – a couple do contain honey.

Alvarado Street Bakery (where to buy – U.S.)
This is another great organic, dairy-free bakery that packs all type of healthy goodies into their breads. Even their Sourdough is made with organic whole grain wheat berries. But their slices are still relatively soft, tender, and sandwich ready.

Izzio (where to buy – U.S.)
You might think it’s easy to find a dairy-free sourdough bread company, but most do use milk in some of their breads. Fortunately, Izzio bread is not only dairy-free and nut-free, it’s also naturally fermented with real sourdough starter and made with short ingredient lists. They offer a full range of sourdough breads, including a range of organic sliced sandwich breads and more traditional sourdough batards.

Sola (where to buy – U.S.)
If you’re looking for low carb, no sugar options, this is a good dairy-free bread brand. They use wheat-based ingredients, so the texture is better than most. And at last check, all of their loaves were dairy-free – including the Sweet & Buttery!

One Mighty Mill (where to buy – U.S.)
They specialize in stone milled flour and have a small but complete selection of sliced breads: sourdough, wheat, everything (wheat), and power grains. All of their breads are dairy-free, but they contain honey, which is why you won’t see them in any vegan guides.

Mighty Manna (where to buy – U.S.)
This organic, kosher parve brand isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s flour-free (they use sprouted wheat), salt-free, oil-free, and yeast-free. That equates to a very dense, moist, and hearty loaf. It’s unique, but intriguing, and the company has a loyal following. These loaves are sold refrigerated or frozen at local natural food stores in a range of varieties. (This company is on our Dedicated Dairy-Free Facility List.)

Honorable Mentions
These brands do have one or two breads with dairy in them (like a cheese bread). But the majority of their loaves are dairy-free and quite tasty!
- ACE Bakery: The first time we tried this bread was in Canada. Their sourdough was love at first taste, so I was excited to see it available in the U.S., too (at Target!). They bake sliced and unsliced breads, but we’ve become fans of their sliced Multigrain Sourdough. Their core line is all dairy-free, but they do have cheese bread.
- Essential Baking: A dear friend got me hooked on their take-and-bake sourdough bread. Each loaf is unsliced and comes vacuum packed, so you can keep it on hand for a special occasion. (The expiry is several months out). They use 100+ year old sourdough starter for authentic flavor. They have several dairy-free breads, but have added a dairy garlic parmesan loaf.

Thanks, this is useful. I’ve been sticking with Dave’s Killer bread so I don’t have to read the whole ingredients list every time. A couple of the other breads you mention sound good – I may give them a try.
Silver Hills Big 16 has been our go-to for years – it’s sold at Target!
